Templar Nation
Getting ready for a trip to California! So, before that happens I thought I would post a concept art piece for a feature film I am a part of.
The film is called Templar Nation, and we went into pre-production about 2 weeks ago. The production is scheduled to end at the beginning of March next year. I am really excited for this production because I will have the opportunity to help produce the visual effects for this movie. (The last 20 minutes of the movie rely heavily on CG.) It is going to be a hard, but very rewarding learning experience.
As time goes on I will post work for this production as much as I am allowed to do so. So keep an eye on my posts.

“Lost on the Path”
Ahh… Done. Tried for a looser style of painting with this one. I found that I like to struggle for realism. But this time around, I let go of that want. And I came out with a result that I like. I enjoy the color in this one, particularly in the face and rocks.
I didn’t do a video this time around, but I won’t leave you empty handed. Here are just a few snaps of the process.

Here’s a Preview
Been a little while since I have posted anything. (been busy with work, the same excuse that many people use). So I thought I would post a preview of a personal project, that I have been working on lately.
Obviously allot of perspective in this one. Wanted to create a sense of extreme depth both vertically and horizontally. To bring focus to the character and to make it seem that that character is being dragged away from the viewer.
I think that I might title this one “Lost on the Path”.

Minecraft Fan Art Illustration
I don’t do fan art too often, but I felt inspired to do something with allot of contrast and that would relate to other people. (If you have have played Minecraft before, you should know what this feels like). I also recorded it! I love to look back and see my mistakes, so I know what to avoid next time.
I think it is funny that I spent so much time in Blender setting up a scene that looks very much like Minecraft, and then paint over the whole thing. But it really did help out on the perspective. (I cheated?).Anyways, here is to all of you Minecraft fans out there. Keep up the good fight.

Alchemy is Fun!
Here is an costume Illustrations that I created with Alchemy and Gimp.
I have been watching “Chaos and Evolution’s” by David Revoy and have been trying out some the techniques he has for coming up with character designs. So after watching the tutorial for a program called Alchemy, I decided to have a go at it.
All I have to say is that this little program is amazing. The way you can just throw down shapes and come up with awesome designs is a blast. And the program itself is really straight forward and easy to learn. (I did have some issues getting it to work in Linux though…).
I am planning on using this program for a while to bust out ideas really quick.
If you want to pick up a copy of Alchemy, its free, and its here. Also, if anyone is interested, I am willing to do a small video of the process I go through, when using Alchemy.
Here are a few brainstorms I did with Alchemy to give you an idea of what can be done. Each one of these took about 5 minutes, more or less.

Red – It is Finally Done!
This one took quite a while to finally wrap up. I think I started on it about a month a go. I actually posted about it. But after getting shot down on some critiques, and other things, I decided to put it aside while I practiced some fundamentals. I think overall it came out really good.
Here is a recording to go with it. Just like I promised.
It took about 5 hours total time to complete. It was all done in the Gimp. -

Romulan Ale!!
Didn’t have allot of work today, so I took the time to jump into the new Blender cycles engine. This tutorial is what I had mimicked to get this wallpaper you see below.
This took me a good part of an afternoon to finish up. The hardest part was getting the federation logo right. (Lets just say this is something that is ridiculously easy to do with the old render engine, and the cycles engine still has a long way to go in the texturing department. Plus not a whole lot of documentation on the render engine yet). But I am looking forward to getting more acquainted with it in the future. I also used Gimp, for some touch up work, and I used Inkscape for the text.
Anyways, here’s to you Kirk!
And everyone else, enjoy!

Another Value Sketch
I know the black and white isn’t quite as interesting as something with color. But I am having fun practicing value with light and shadow. It feels like I am starting to get a better hold on it all.
I spent about a half hour on this, with no reference. Also I have been playing around with the whole left brain right brain thing. And I am seeing if I can quickly jump into a right brain mode and notice when I do so. I have been running through the chapters in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Just the chapters on how and why children draw the way they do. Its a good read to see if I still have some bad habits from my adolescents.
Its interesting to realize how much I have lost the ability to not worry about how “good” my drawings are, and just draw. For the sake of drawing. The book says I am rediscovering the childhood artist within me. We’ll see.I would like to make some suggestions to anyone who is trying to become an artist.
First one is the book that I mentioned above. It seems that this book has almost become a cliche art education, just because it is a book that we have all seen before. There is a reason why teachers use it. But a little warning for this book. The book presents some useful techniques, such as understanding negative and positive space and some of the contour line exercises. But unfortunately the author uses this left-brain and right-brain “science” to say that the reason why you can’t draw is because you aren’t using your right brain enough. So everything is about forcing you into this right-brain mode. There is no real instruction on perspective (which is a vital foundational skill for representing anything accurately on paper, and is a left-brain activity, supposedly). There is no instruction on composition and stylization, which are important as well (and are left-brain activities). Basically this book teaches you how to draw what you see. And that is a good thing, and a skill that every artist should have. But remember, when reading this book, it is not the end all of your progression as an artist. And that there is still much to learn in becoming an authoritative artist. you can get it for about 2 dollars at this link here .
I don’t think I have ever read it straight through, but instead pick at the parts that I feel I am struggling with at the moment.Another suggestion, are the two 10 Top Tips To Becoming a Better Artist on the cgsociety forums. I read these regularly and it helps me to focus on what is important to do in relation to becoming a better artist. The first one is at the top of the forum, and the next one is a little down the page. both are written by great artists, who have been spending years helping other artists improve their skills on cgsociety.org.
I hope that some of you will take a peak at these suggestions, I know that they have really helped me to improve my artistic skill.
