Track for this page : Final Fantasy VII | “The Prelude”
Iconic Songs
In the video game universe, there are only a few songs that people outside of the gamer culture would recognize. The first one that might come to your mind as an “Iconic” song is the Super Mario Brothers theme. The next might be the Legend of Zelda theme. But I have been surprised by how many people I have met who can recognize one of the many variants of the Chocobo theme.
The bird itself along with a few other characters have become consistent entries in many Final Fantasy titles, and an icon to many fans, but this is the only one that has a song dedicated to it. And if you don’t believe that the song has become somewhat “iconic”, search YouTube with the query “Chocobo Theme”. Everything from dubstep to a someone training there cockatiel to sing this theme, supports my point. This song has become apart of the character of what makes up those giant, funny, yellow chickens.
But the one song that most fans would probably agree with calling iconic would be “The Prelude”.
Other Possibly Iconic Songs
“Final Fantasy” – FFI
“One Winged Angle” – FFVII
Prelude
Appearing in the first Final Fantasy game, this song has stuck with many of the titles as the prelude music to each game in some form or another. Almost like that signature on a painting that I was talking about.
This song, for me, symbolically brings all of the titles into a great whole. It is a song of courage, hope, sadness, happiness, and ultimate triumph over evil, which makes up the message that Final Fantasy brings through its stories and characters. It represents the great adventure and experiences that Final Fantasy has taken us through.
And most of all, it represents the struggles and successes of the directors, writers, programmers, artists, and musicians who had bet all that they had left, on one last game.
For many people, a game is a game. No real value, just a little entertainment, thats all. But Square Enix, along with it’s composers, Nobuo Uematsu, Takahito Eguchi, etc., have created great musical value in these games, that inspire me, and continue to inspire those who enjoy Final Fantasy.
